Born and raised in California, I am a social and cultural historian whose work is inspired by the lives of ordinary people who did extraordinary things. Most of my nonfiction work centers on the history of childhood. Please see my publications page for more details. I am also working on a historical novel based on the true story of American civilians who were interned in the Philippines during World War II. I have taught a variety of U.S. history and historical research & writing courses at the University of California, Berkeley, Sacramento State Univeristy, and American River College.
When I am not writing, I work to promote the interests of women historians as the president of the Western Association of Women Historians (WAWH), and volunteer with my local historical society. I love to travel and am a heritage tourism enthusiast. Heritage tourism is a fabulous way to gain appreciation for and get a sense of what life was like in the past.
